The Armenians and the upgrowing racism in Russia

by Anna Karapetyan

In the recent years the “national question” in Russia has been becoming more and more critical. Illegal immigrants from the Caucasian countries and the former Soviet republics are an issue for both the people and the Government. To understand how big and complex this problem is, we need first of all always keep in mind that there are more than 180 peoples in Russia. And as a matter of fact, many of them had to leave their homes and move to Russia after the USSR collapse, for example as my family did, and are now a strong part of the modern Russian society.

Today we can observe an extremely opposite situation. Immigrants from the Caucasus and the central Asian countries come over the Russian borders in search of normal jobs to be able to support their families at home. Frequently, they don’t speak fluently the language, they have to work in horrible conditions and they are often involved in criminal activities – what can’t please the local population. However, it often ends well for them as the local police closes its eyes on what goes on. As a result, people are tired to wait for some actions from the authorities and takes an initiative.

This is what lead to the murder of a young Russian guy, Egor Sherbakov, on October 10th 2013 by the Azerbaijanian immigrant Orhan Zeinalov and caused the mass disturbances of the local residents in the Moscow suburb Biruluvo. The 25 years-old guy was killed by knife, trying to defend his girlfriend from Zeinalov. The couple was going to marry. This murder gave start to the mass riots in Moscow and the rest of Russia. The murderer was found after some days. The locals say that this district is getting more and more dangerous for them because of the illegal immigrants from Chechnya, Dagestan, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. The situation has been critical long ago, but nor police, nor the local authorities has done nothing to deal with it.

The local market, which was closed after the mass disturbances, was a very profitable place for both the corrupted policemen and illegal immigrants such as Zeinalov and many others who had their business in this suburb. So, as usually, people suffer from the authorities irresponsibility and have to deal with critical problem by themselves.

On the other hand , the nationalistic moods raised critically. Nationalistic parties and organizations gather together to “defend” Russian girls and boys from all non-russians. We, Armenians are scared to go out from our homes as no one is guaranteed from being thrusted by knife late at night coming home from work or beated up by neo-nazis and nationalists. Not long ago, in Russian city Arzamas (Nizhny Novgorod oblast) – with mainly Armenian population – was killed another young man and, as assures the local police, the foreigners were implicated in this murder. And again the local residents indignation caused disturbances in the city.

Within a week 15 Armenian families had to sell their business and leave their homes for other places. The nationalistic websites didn’t lose the chance to turn the incident to their advantage. And the city’s authorities again closed their eyes and didn’t take any measures as well as the police did. No doubts there are certain interested parties, who provoke such incidents and find them very profitable. The question is: who are that parties and who stands behind them? How long will we have to suffer from the governmental unwillingness to solve the problem? While the criminals are not punished so far, we stand alone. We, full Russian citizens who are the big part of its world’s heritage and national dignity. And as many times in the history, Armenians again can rely only on themselves.
